Ziprasidone was approved by the FDA in 2001 and is widely prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is a second‑generation antipsychotic. It helps balance certain brain chemicals to improve mood, thinking, and behavior. The medicine is available as capsules and, in some settings, as an injection. You take it by mouth exactly as your clinician directs.
Ziprasidone is used to treat schizophrenia. It is also used for manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder. Your doctor will decide if this medicine is right for you based on your symptoms and medical history. If you have other mental health concerns, talk them through with your clinician to plan the best treatment.
Take Ziprasidone exactly as prescribed. Do not change your dose on your own. To absorb the medicine well, take it with a meal of at least 500 calories. Do not take it with alcohol.
Your usual dose is taken twice a day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Take each dose with a meal or snack. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not chew or crush them. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed one and return to your regular schedule. Do not double up.
Store Ziprasidone at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original container unless told otherwise. Keep it out of reach of children. If your packaging shows an expiry date, do not use the medicine after that date. Regular check‑ups with your doctor help ensure the medicine works well for you.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth. You may feel sleepy at first. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
Call your doctor if you notice restlessness, muscle stiffness, tremors, or trouble staying still. Seek urgent help if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe or persistent dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat. These could be signs of a serious reaction.
Tell your clinician if you have a history of heart problems, low salt levels, or long QT syndrome. Ziprasidone can affect heart rhythm in rare cases. Also tell your doctor about other medicines you take, including over‑the‑counter drugs and supplements.
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss risks and benefits with your doctor. If you notice any unusual changes in mood or behavior, or thoughts of harming yourself, contact a clinician right away.
