Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal medicine that blocks an enzyme fungi need to build their cell walls, slowing infection. It is commonly used to treat yeast infections in the mouth, throat, genital area, and other parts of the body.
Fluconazole comes as tablets, a liquid, and an injectable form. It reaches many body fluids and tissues, including saliva and urine. This helps treat infections in the mouth, urinary tract, and other areas.
Most people take it once daily. The exact dose and length of treatment depend on the infection and your health. Side effects are usually mild.
The primary use is to treat mucosal yeast infections. This includes oral thrush, throat infections, and vaginal yeast infections. It also treats esophageal candidiasis and certain fungal infections of the blood or organs in people with weaker immune systems. People with long-standing diabetes or certain immune conditions may see more benefit from fluconazole when these infections flare up.
Fluconazole works for skin and soft tissue infections caused by yeasts, such as candidal rashes. It can be used to prevent fungal infections in people at high risk, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, transplant, or certain immune diseases. It is also used for fungal infections of the urinary tract when the organism is susceptible to fluconazole. For persistent or recurrent infections, your clinician may adjust the plan to prevent future episodes.
For cryptococcal meningitis, fluconazole may be used as part of the treatment plan. In HIV or other immune conditions, it can help prevent relapse after the initial treatment. Your doctor will tailor the dose and duration to your situation. In some cases, fluconazole is chosen because it is easier to take as a single daily pill.
Fluconazole is in the azole family. It blocks lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, an enzyme fungi use to make ergosterol, a key part of the fungal cell membrane.
Without ergosterol, the fungal membrane becomes unstable. Fungi stop growing and may die. Humans have different enzymes, so fluconazole tends to be less active on our cells, which helps limit harm when used as directed.
The drug spreads well through the body and into fluids. It reaches the brain, joints, eyes, and other tissues, which allows it to treat infections in many locations. In some people, this broad distribution helps prevent recurrence after treatment ends.
Most people tolerate fluconazole well. Common side effects include headache, stomach upset, nausea, and dizziness. Some people develop a skin rash or itching, or feel tired after taking the medicine.
More serious problems are possible but rare. Call your clinician if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, or persistent vomiting. Liver injury or heart rhythm changes can occur, especially with other medicines or high doses. Stop the medicine and seek help if you have new severe symptoms.
Drug interactions matter. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including vitamins and herbal products. Do not adjust doses on your own, and seek advice if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or have kidney disease. If you have liver disease or are breastfeeding, discuss safety with your clinician before starting fluconazole.
