What Repaglinide is and how it works

Repaglinide is a meglitinide class diabetes medicine that stimulates the pancreas to release insulin after meals. It is used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.

It is short-acting and starts working quickly, usually within minutes after you take it before a meal. Its effect helps keep your blood sugar in a healthier range mainly around the time you eat.

This medicine is meant to be part of a plan that includes a healthy diet and regular activity. It is not for type 1 diabetes and should be used under your clinician’s guidance.

Common medical uses

Repaglinide is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not enough. It can be added to a plan that may include other medicines if needed.

It is often prescribed when metformin cannot be used by itself or when another oral diabetes medicine is not giving the target control. Your doctor will choose the best combination for you.

It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. If you have a long-standing condition like this, other treatments are required.

How it is typically taken

Take repaglinide by mouth before meals. A common approach is to take it 15 minutes to 1 hour before each meal, depending on your plan.

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet unless your doctor tells you to.

If you skip a meal, skip the dose for that meal. If you have a larger meal planned, talk with your doctor about adjusting the dose accordingly.

Important safety information

This medicine can lower your blood sugar too much, especially if you miss meals, exercise more than usual, or drink alcohol. Watch for signs of low blood sugar and treat promptly if needed.

Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. Some drugs can raise or lower repaglinide levels and increase the risk of low blood sugar or other interactions. Do not start or stop medicines without medical guidance.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding, talk with your clinician before taking repaglinide. Your treatment plan may change during pregnancy or while nursing.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is low blood sugar. This risk is higher if you miss meals or drink alcohol while taking repaglinide.

You may also notice headaches, dizziness, or stomach upset. Some people report back or joint pain, or small changes in weight.

If you notice signs of a serious reaction—such as severe rash, swelling, trouble breathing, or confusion—contact your doctor right away. Store the medicine as advised and keep it out of reach of children.
