Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It helps reduce pain and swelling by blocking enzymes that fuel inflammation in the body.
It comes in several formsβoral capsules or tablets, a liquid suspension, and rectal suppositories in some cases. Doses and preparations vary by age, condition, and doctor guidance.
Indomethacin is commonly prescribed for inflammatory and painful conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and acute gout. It can also relieve tendon or Bursa inflammation and other soft-tissue injuries.
In addition to chronic conditions, it may be used for short courses to reduce fever or manage pain after dental work or surgery. Your clinician will tailor the plan to balance relief with safety and minimize exposure time.
Do not take indomethacin if you have had an allergic reaction to indomethacin or to other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Reactions can range from hives to breathing difficulties.
People with a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers, GI bleeding, or perforation should avoid NSAIDs or use them only under strict medical supervision. Kidney disease, severe liver problems, or heart failure raise safety concerns and may require alternative therapies.
Pregnancy safety is also important. NSAIDs are generally avoided in the later stages of pregnancy and may affect fetal development or labor. Elderly patients and those with dehydration, poor kidney perfusion, or multiple ongoing medications should be monitored closely for adverse effects and drug interactions.
Common effects in many users include upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, dizziness, and headaches. Some people notice mild swelling or facial flushing.
Less common are diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, and ringing in the ears or slight blurred vision. Skin reactions can occur but are relatively rare and may require discontinuation if signs of allergy appear.
Serious but uncommon events demand urgent attention: signs of GI bleeding (black stools, vomiting blood), marked vomiting, severe stomach pain, reduced urine output, swelling of hands or feet, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or shortness of breath. Severe allergic reactions or chest pain are medical emergencies. If any of these occur, seek immediate care.
Indomethacin can interact with many medicines. Do not start or stop any drug without consulting a clinician, especially if you take blood thinners, other NSAIDs, or medicines that affect the kidneys or stomach lining.
Anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (for example, warfarin) can raise the risk of bleeding when used with NSAIDs. Combining indomethacin with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids increases the chance of stomach ulcers and internal bleeding.
Other interactions to watch for include blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors or ARBs) and diuretics, which may be less effective or raise kidney risk when used with indomethacin. Lithium, methotrexate, and certain antibiotics can have altered levels in the body, requiring closer monitoring. Alcohol can amplify stomach irritation and GI bleeding risk. If you have kidney disease, dehydration, or are planning surgery, discuss timing and dosing with your provider.
